Blog - Talking with Jesus
Nicodemus, a prominent Pharisee, sought Jesus. Most Jewish leaders like himself had no room in their hearts for Jesus, but Nicodemus was curious and went to talk to Him late at night.
He trudged against a cold spring wind in the narrow streets of Jerusalem to find Jesus, a man who many believed was the Son of God, the Messiah. When he found Him, he said, "Teacher we know you came from God. No one could perform the miracles you do unless God were with him."
Jesus said, "I assure you: Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Nicodemus wrinkled his brow. "How can this happen?" he asked. "Can a man enter his mother's womb and be born a second time?"
Jesus smiled. "Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed. Think about it. The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
Jesus explained to Nicodemus about heaven and spirit in a way he could understand, using Scripture from Moses. He said, "As Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness (people looked on the snake and trusted God to heal their snake bites), so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life. For God loved the world so much that He gave His One and Only Son, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life."
Jesus spoke of His coming suffering and dying on the cross for the sins of the world. The good news is He didn't stay dead. On the third day He rose so that those who believe in Him will live with Him forever.
Think About It
This is the gospel in a nutshell. Nicodemus was the first man to hear God's plan of salvation because he was a seeker. Are you a seeker? Do you have questions? It's okay. You can ask God and He will answer through Scripture verses or people you trust.
Pray About It
Lord Jesus, thank you for the story of this Pharisee who had questions. I have questions too. Help me understand as you helped Nicodemus. Amen.
If you had the best news in the world, would you keep it a secret? I wouldn't. I would want everyone to know.
We have the best news, the good news that God loves the world. That means your friends and family. If they don't know, they need to know. Who will tell them?
Statistics show that people who come to know God in a personal relationship, come because a friend or family member talked to them and prayed for them. It happened in Jesus' day too.
One day John the Baptist was with his disciples and saw Jesus pass by. He said, "Look! The Lamb of God" (John 1:36). Andrew, one of John's friends, followed Jesus. Then he went to get his brother, Simon (also called Peter). "We have found the Messiah!" Many years of prophesies foretold about the Messiah. When Andrew recognized Him, he couldn't wait to tell his brother.
The next day, Jesus found Philip and said, "Follow me!" and he did. He found his friend, Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about, Jesus the son of Joseph from Nazareth."
Nathanael said, "Nazareth? Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip convinced him and he went to see Jesus.
"Here is a true Israelite. No deceit is in him," said Jesus (John 1:47).
"How do you know me?"
"I saw you under the fig tree."
Nathanael recognized Jesus as the Son of God.
"You believe because I said I saw you under the fig tree," Jesus said. "You will see even greater things" (John 1:50-51).
Think About It
When we follow Jesus, that is the way it is. We first trust our friends or family who tell us about Jesus. Then we check it out and believe the truth for ourselves. We cannot keep God's love a secret. We want everyone to know how special He makes us feel, so we tell our friends. Do you have someone you would like to tell but don't know how? Tell Jesus and He will help.
Pray About It
Lord Jesus, thank you for showing me so much love. Thank you for your word, the truth. I pray for an opportunity to tell ______________ about your love. I pray that you would prepare her heart to hear how you love her. Help me to have the right words. Amen.
