Jesus told a parable about ten virgins to describe what the kingdom of heaven is like. He said they waited and waited with their lamps burning. Five wise virgins took extra oil but the other five didn't. The groom was delayed and all the virgins fell asleep. Then in the middle of the night the announcement came with a shout. "Here comes the groom! Come out to meet Him."
The virgins rose and trimmed their lamps, but the five foolish virgins came to the ones with more oil. "Give us some of
your oil," they said.
The wise virgins replied, "There won't be enough for you and us. Go buy your own oil."
While they were gone, the groom came, and the five virgins who were prepared went into the wedding banquet. Then the door was shut.
After the five virgins purchased their oil, they came
to the door and said, "Master, master, open up for us!" How terrible it must have been to be on the outside, begging to get in and then to hear the groom say, "I don't know you."
Jesus said, "No one knows the day or the hour so be alert."
Think About It
Do you think the five wise virgins were unfair not to share their oil? I have thought so, but the truth is, we don't get to heaven on another person's faith. Each person is accountable. Each person must be prepared for the day Jesus comes. How will you be ready? If you're not sure, read the Bible and pray. God will tell you.
Pray About It
Lord Jesus, strengthen our faith so it won't fade before you come. Let your light shine on us and prepare us for your return. Amen.
