”I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.“
(Romans 16:17-20)
In our world, we have a lot of twisted doctrines in front of our face daily. People on social media fight all the time over biblical passages and interpretations, there are over a dozen different denominations surrounding God and the Bible with twisted beliefs, and we are more easily swayed today than in the past due to the hundreds of voices speaking to us daily through the news, emails, community, and people we follow on social media.
This passage in Romans is the very last passage that Paul gives to the Romans as instruction. Paul had just encouraged the Romans in his letters of Jesus’ love and grace. After living in a culture of performance based righteousness and condemnation over your gender, race, financial status, and works given for God, hearing that Jesus cleans all of your sins and forgives you completely despite your lack of righteousness was a huge turn around. Paul wanted to make sure that after he encouraged them in these doctrines that they didn’t sway from the truth.
Let’s take the same encouragement from Paul today and not be swayed in our faith in Jesus.
People and things will try to deter you from the truth, water down the importance of the gospel, and change your beliefs on the Bible.
I’ve had Mormons and people of other denominations try to convince me that things that God actually said in the Bible weren’t true, so I found that we need to be strong in our beliefs of the Bible. We need to remember what God calls truth and lies. We need to put on the armor of God so that we will not be swayed in the world.
I watched a video of a girl being asked by a stranger to join a bible study online. She was immediately excited, but felt like she should ask what the girl believed. If she didn’t know the truth of the gospel and what Jesus teaches and right and wrong, she could have joined a bible study that believed in a different denomination and doctrine than that of hers.
This week, let’s remember the truths of the gospel that Jesus has taught us, and that He has gone through great lengths to giving us the truth across history.
Let’s stay strong in our faith!!
“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”
(1 Corinthians 16:13-14)
