What to do if you feel defeated: 1 Corinthians 15

By Lauren Makenzie @ Writing for His Glory

”So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.“

‭‭(1 Corinthians‬ ‭15‬:‭42‬-‭44‬)

Every one of us has at one point in our lives felt defeated, exhausted, and weak. In these moments the work assignments, the lingering health problems, the stress of day-to-day life, and anything else can feel too overbearing and daunting.

I believe this passage answers the question to when we don’t know what to do when life gets hard or when we feel weak and troubled.

So what do we do when we’re defeated? What do we do when we have nothing left to give?

We don't work alone when we have God

God has proven to show up for every person in the Bible who needed Him. I don't know about you, but that's a pretty cool track record! And his record will never end. This means that when life is tripping you up and stressing you out, making you feel defeated and lost, you don't have to fight this battle alone.

The world will strip away our belief that we need help from someone. That we have to fight battles alone. While we will have people who won’t help us fight our battles, that’s ok because all we need is Jesus.

If you feel too weak, God will help you with his power according to his perfect will. If you’ve lived your life mostly independent of people, beginning that dependence on God is the answer when you feel defeated in life and need an answer.

We cannot resurrect, but God can

People aren’t capable of turning bad things into good… without God. God can work through us and bring life into the world, yet we are incapable of resurrecting anything as we’re not perfect.

The resurrected souls cannot resurrect- only the one who resurrects can resurrect a bad thing into a good thing.

God can turn the worst things into life into the biggest blessings in your life. He can bring the tired seasons into lively and joyful times, just as He has resurrected our dying souls when Jesus resurrected from the grave,

Believe in God’s power to turn things around in ways you could never hope to repair the hard areas of your life.

When you feel like giving up, know that God is a God of resurrecting the bad into good. You might feel defeated, but he resurrects our perished souls and our defeated hearts. He has already won.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

It all comes down to your faith

With faith, all things in him are possible. One thing I want to get straight and clear is that it isn't our works that make everything better- it isn't our effort to appear perfect and strong in front of the mirror and in front of others that helps us win the victory in our crazy seasons. It is the belief in Jesus' power at work in our lives.

I promise that He will come through for you because He has for everyone else. He leaves the 99 for you. However you're feeling in this season- whether it's defeat, depression, anxiousness, or emptiness- put your trust in the Lord and allow Him to resurrect your defeated season into a season he brings the victory in.

We never know God's timeline, or when He will bring the victory, but remember His track record, and remember that He will not stop with you.

"'What do you think? If someone had one hundred sheep and one of them wandered off, wouldn’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillsides and go in search for the one that wandered off? If he finds it, I assure you that he is happier about having that one sheep than about the ninety-nine who didn’t wander off. In the same way, my Father who is in heaven doesn’t want to lose one of these little ones." (Matthew 18:12-14)
