Be Mindful about What you’re Consuming: How to Handle your Spiritual Life by How you Spend your Time

In the Bible, Jesus teaches that what we abide in, consume and think on impacts us. What we spend time with fills us, whether it be good or bad.

Good friends sharpen us while bad company hurts us. Walking in the world results in disaster while abiding in Jesus brings life.

What are you filling yourself with? The list I created below is a cheat sheet to what builds us every day:

  • Thoughts

  • Feelings

  • Tv

  • Music

  • Books

  • Relationships

  • Hobbies

  • Apps

  • Mindsets

Of each category listed above, something is filling us each time we use it.

If you think on the apps, books, movies, relationships, and/or thoughts that you consume daily/weekly, how does it affect you?

Do you feel drained out and stressed, pushed to the limit or anxious after each time you read that book, see that person, listen to that song, or watch that show?

Now I know life isn’t perfect at all, but I’ve learned that where God’s peace that surpasses all understanding is, is where he wants me to be when it comes to what I’m filling myself with.

If something you are consuming regularly, whether it be a tv show/mindset/song that you follow, constantly wears you out, then it’s not God’s best for you. He doesn’t want us to pursue those things.

“So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbringing.”

-Romans 14:19

God wants us to live in peace and joy from him. We can’t find it in the world.

We’re not strong enough on our own to uphold our righteous, holy, peaceful selves and go consume worldly things every day.

It's easy for me to blindly consume "fun" things and tell God that I can handle it. Often times, we think things don't affect us like they do, but they really do.

If you fill yourself with the world, you will turn out like the world, but if you fill yourself with Jesus, you will turn out like Jesus.

The quote, "You are who you hang around" is so true, and it goes beyond the people we're around.

Learn to be mindful of the social media accounts, music, shows, and mindsets that aren't helping you at all.

Jesus knows that you already have enough on your plate. He wants you to have his peace today and every day in the future.

What makes your life better? What has the Lord's peace surrounding it as you consume it? Who in your life make you feel safe? If something is corrupting your peace and character, it's not worth it.

Ultimately, we are to abide in the true vine, Jesus, and meditate on his perfect word. His word brings the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-26) and is life for our bones.
