Choose the Good Portion: A Message from Mary and Martha

If you're feeling like you can't see or hear the Lord today:

This world has many distractions. Work, the internet, schedules, and people around us are constantly taking our attention.

In doing this, oftentimes we don't realize that our eyes are off of Jesus and onto something else. If you feel like this has been you lately, Jesus has a message for you.

”But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”“

-‭‭Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭40‬-‭42‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Martha perfectly describes the person that loves the Lord and simultaneously cannot surrender their time to Him due to trying to complete tasks left and right. By trying to anxiously complete our to-do lists without resting in the Lord and being with Him, we are following Martha's footsteps.

I've spent a lot of days like Martha lately, in that I would be distracted and fixated on something else instead of Jesus. I would feel his loving nudge to spend time with Him, yet I felt like I wasn't good enough until I completed x, y, and z.

Doing good for others is a great thing, but what's the why behind it? Is it to please God, or to make sure you pleased someone else? Is it to obey God's call or keep up with everyone else who is endlessly running?

If you find that you can't surrender your rest to God, then you might be doing things, even if they are good, for the wrong reasons and in the wrong time frames. Even God rested on the seventh day.

It could be a reason why God seems distant, quiet, or confusing right now.

One tip I want to leave with you today is to surrender your distractions and to-do lists to the Lord. He is sovereign, and He deserves first place in your life. Our plans without God cannot succeed.

In surrendering the schedule, we can choose the good portion.

Remember Jesus' love for you today, and don't let go of it. I pray that you never forget the precious relationship that you have with Him! It is freeing to surrender everything and walk with Him, allowing him to lead you and love you perfectly.

Closing Prayer

Dear God, we thank you for your guidance. We thank you for your eyes and ears that you offer to us in the midst of this crazy world. Today I ask that you would eliminate the distractions and shiny things that are taking our eyes off of you, and allow us to surrender the things in our schedule that do not need to be there today. Lord, help us to be like Mary today, one who sits and listens for you, no matter what people say to us. Allow us to become pleasers of you and not of people- your approval is way more worth achieving than others' approval. Please help us to meditate on you and your word and not lose sight of our precious relationship with you. In Jesus name, Amen. 🫶🏼
