Psalm 62: 5-8: My Hope Comes From the Lord

"Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken. My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock. My refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before him. God is our refuge."

This passage is filled with beautiful truths. It shows the love between a person and God, how much he loves us and how much he does for us. It shows the relationship of someone spending time with the Lord and abiding in him.

In the gospels, Jesus would oftentimes retreat to a lonely and quiet place to spend time with God. He would wait on the Lord and put his hope in Him.

While it was hard to spend time with God in silence then, now it's even harder to find a quiet and still place to spend time with God. Everything around us is pulling us away from a still place to meditate on God and his word, and it's easy to forget due to all of the distractions.

Why is it important to go to a quiet space and wait on the Lord?

  • Jesus did it himself

  • Our hope comes from him

  • He is our rock and salvation

  • He is our refuge

  • We need to be filled with Jesus daily

  • The world around us constantly speaks lies and destruction into our hearts

The Lord is God of all creation. He is perfect, the definition of love, and our savior. We owe everything to Him although we can offer him nothing other than our hearts.

God doesn't need us, but he wants our heart, and he wants a relationship with us. We truly need this.

I heard someone once say that God is a gentleman- He's not going to make you have a relationship with him outside of your own will, but he gives a gentle whisper of love to you in hopes that you will come to him.

This passage shows how much we need God. I hope this reminds you how much you need him- that we can try to do everything on our own power and strength, but ultimately we need God. We're not a refuge on our own; we can't earn our salvation and glory by ourselves.

Friend, he is your rock, salvation, and stronghold. He is your refuge, your glory. May you rest in him alone today, trusting in him no matter what happens, pouring out your heart to him.
